house of commons voting in favor of Boris Johnson/ UK Parliament passes brexit deal

house of commons voting in favor of
Boris Johnson

The House of Commons sir has voted

overwhelmingly in favor of Prime

Minister Boris Johnson's brexit do

finally paving the way for the United

Kingdom to leave the European Union

later this month and after more than

four decades of membership a deal has

cleared its a biggest hurdle with the

vote that followed a third reading of

Parliament 330 voted for and 231 against

putting an end to three years of

political wrangling following the 2016

brexit referendum our UK correspondent

Lucy ho joins us and now a very good

evening to you Lucy certainly from South

Africa does this mean that brexit is now

unstoppable I think it's safe to say

that its path is pretty clear now I'm in

the contrast with this vote in the House

of Commons today on Thursday just

demonstrates quite a contrast with where

we were this time last year to resume

who was paralyzed her brexit billed

repeatedly voted down in the House of

Commons of course leading eventually to

her resignation Boris Johnson then took

over as leader at campaigning in the

most recent general election on that

clear message get brexit done and we

knew that this is a process that he

really wanted to expediate

the fact that the bill is already in its

third reading in terms of UK

parliamentary processes is

extraordinarily quick this is the final

stage of the bill in the House of

Commons it now goes to the House of

Lords where peers will make any

amendments but they have been urged by

MPs to not do anything that might derail

the legislation and if all goes to plan

in the Lord's the bill will become law

by the end of the month just three days

before our scheduled departure date

which of course is January the 31st and

at that point the bill then comes here

to Brussels for EU leaders to ratify

that legislation and it's then that the

formal trade negotiations can begin so

we really are at the start of the

process but this is a hugely significant

milestone and I wanted Boris Johnson

see I like to talk about that

significance you mentioned it earlier on

hard differences different as Boris

Johnson's plan from that of his

predecessor to his MA but not all that

different I think care was the course of

analysis I mean it's it's hard we use

this term hard or soft brexit it does

diverge further where it creates a more

distant economic relationship well that

seems to be the outline planned in that

in the legislation but really that the

key change was to the Northern Irish

backstop of course the mechanism in

Therese as Anna Mae's deal that caused

such problems for her when she tried to

get that bill through the House of

Commons Euroskeptic MPs and people who

wanted us to leave a clean break black

brexit said that it would make us have

to close an economic relationship with

the European Union

moving forward what Boris Johnson deals

does is it keeps just Northern Ireland

in the EU customs union but there is

some fears for the impact on Northern

Irish businesses that the Boris

Johnson's backstop solution might now

provide so there are still some issues

and and we have heard from lots of MPs

in the comments today their concerns

about Boris Johnson's bill particularly

issues like the environment and on

citizens rights but it has passed with

it with a huge majority of 99 a historic

victory for Boris Johnson who has this

very clear mandate after his landslide

victory in the last election and well

we'll take a look at what will it take

to hammer out this deal interesting

moment but I want to find out what the

reaction has been just looking at an

earlier statement by made by Hungary's

far-right Prime Minister Viktor Orban he

seems to endorse the deal but some of

the things that he has said some people

have believed are alarmist and and

didn't quite agree with what has been

the European reaction to the

developments in the UK well I think the

EU is as Britain is keen for an end to

the paralysis you know I've been in the

European Parliament today speaking to

British and your

MVP's who say they felt completely

paralyzed by this process you know at

British mu peace you've been waiting for

months to know whether there might be a

second referendum you know they've been

huge for businesses on either side

there's been a huge amount of

uncertainty so I think there is cautious

optimism from EU leaders that this might

now kickstart the next stage of the

process that there's now no further

possibility of a second referendum that

either side know where they are now and

that means that both sides can start the

next stage of the process which is of

course at trying to thrash out a trade

deal with in just the eleven month

period but that in and of itself is is

an immensely complex process that I

think both sides are going into with

some trepidation certainly Boris Johnson

sees that he will be able to achieve a

comprehensive free trade arrangement but

here in Brussels there is caution they

think that the time frame is much too

short that they instead are going to

have to work sector by sector on a

slimmed-down deal to prioritize at Boris

Johnson says that he wants to diverge in

key sectors particularly financial

services there was a clear message from

the EU president yesterday Ursula von

der Leyen when she was on a visit to

London that close regulatory alignment

was necessary and should the UK start to

take steps further away in regulatory

terms that will cause problems and will

lead to a less close economic

partnership so we are certainly looking

at tricky times ahead lots of difficult

questions to be asked and of course just

the beginning of what will be a very

long and complicated process and Lucia

as you say the Hungarian Prime

Minister's saying that it all depends

from the prism with which both sides

look at this deal one in European

leaders that they don't necessarily have

the upper hand that is also within their

interest that the UK gets what it wants

so some observers believe that it's

about to get Messier is that consensus

on this this second phase of

negotiations

I think the mood music broadly will

certainly when Boris Johnson won his

majority there was relief from EU

leaders that at last we had a decisive

option of course he you leaders don't

want to see the Britain leave the

European Union there is a there's no two

ways around that they ideally would like

the UK to change its mind but within

this deal within the withdrawal

agreement bill there are it does address

key issues as we were saying the

Northern Irish Protocol which resolved

the issue of the Northern Irish backstop

but also the issue of citizens rights

and I think that is a key issue which

we'll need to watch over the coming

months certainly the EU Council

President shall Michel was talking of

his concern as ed said that that would

become an issue of Michel Barnier also

there that he used chief negotiator was

saying that this is really something to

watch he is concerned about the rights

of EU citizens living and working in

Britain of course this this bill

technically guarantees their rights but

Michel Barnier was saying we really need

to make sure that there is a watchdog in

place that those rights are being

monitored that there's a way for you

citizens to complain should they have

need to there is some concern that

perhaps some of what is in this

withdrawal withdrawal agreement bill

will need to be monitored in the coming

months

I want to ask this question about the

blue economy Lucey Croatia for instance

raising the issue of fishing rights a

warning that failure to reach agreement

or consensus could lead to the cod Wars

which were in the 1970s it is there a

lot of wrangling over rights certainly

with regards to fishing yes that is a

key issue as one of the key campaign

messages of the leave campaign at the

time of the EU referendum it was one of

the key messages that UK fishermen had

long been had there you know had been

just at a disadvantage because of the

Common Fisheries Policy that issue has

been separated and we know that Ursula

von der Leyen has said it's one of the

two issues that will be the two sectors

that will be looked at first during the

trade negotiation

that and free track tariffs trade that

was a clear message from Ursula von der

Leyen yesterday but yes there was a talk

there is clearly concern from the

European Union that they might be locked

out of fishing in UK waters which would

have huge economic consequences for them

so there is real concern about that

issue it is something that is going to

be looked at in a lot of detail in the

coming weeks but there is a lot to do

they're going to be doing a

sector-by-sector piecemeal process

that's what we're hearing from EU

officials at the moment but certainly

fishing and free tire of trade are the

two central issues to be looked at first

they will then be looking at security

and foreign policy but I think there is

concern from all sides about the limited

time frame to look at these really

important issues that as you say affect

a number of other EU countries as well I

thank you very much sir lucy her our UK

correspondent speaking to us from

brussels or on the latest on that a

house of commons voting in favor of

Boris Johnson sir bricks

Prince Harry and Meghan to step back as senior Royals

Harry and Meghan step back

It was in central London yesterday just ,yesterday that Harrier Megan decided in

a somewhat bizarre move to make a very

public declaration of thanks to Canada

for their very private six-week break

from royal duties on Vancouver Island on

the country's remote western coast but

it was where they clearly did a lot of

thinking time with baby archie where

they took this photo and some deep chats

about their future should it be in the

royal family or out of it looking back

on how they were yesterday it's clear

harrier Megan felt a weight had been

lifted from their shoulders and tonight

a dramatic personal statement from the

couple explained why after many months

of reflection and internal discussions

the couple said we have chosen to make a

transition this year in starting to

carve out a progressive new role within

this institution we intend to and here

is the key bit step back as senior

members of the royal family and work to

become financially independent while

continuing to fully support Her Majesty

the Queen we now plan to balance our

time between the United Kingdom and

North America

the problem with Prince Harry is that

you know going off saying that he wants

to live half in one country in half in

another I don't quite see how that's

going to work and he wants to continue

his pat reduced he want to continue to

support the royal family is he still

going to hold on to all his military

appointments and no one does seem to

know how this is going to work I

understand no member of the royal family

and that includes the Queen was aware of

the timing or the content of tonight's

announcement that was all kind of

acknowledged in a short and hurried

response from Buckingham Palace

discussions with the sixes the palace

said are at an early stage we understand

their desire to take a different

approach but these are complicated

issues that will take time to work

through

the standoff between the Sussex is in

parts of the British press has been

well-documented Harry spoke about those

tensions in his ITV documentary last

year but the tensions between this

couple and the rest of the family are

also behind their decision it's not

enough to just survive something right

that's not the point of life you've got

a thrive you've got to feel happy so now

for the questions do they stay at

Frogmore cottage renovated out of the

public funded royal purse what about

their titles and what about their police

funded protection teams His Royal

Highness is the Queen's grandson and

eventually in the future he will be the

son of the king or indeed the brother of

the king

so all that still has a very large

threat element attached to it so that

threat is not going to go away in recent

weeks in pictures the palace has been

focusing on the Queen and the three

future Kings Harry and Megan have now

announced their bid for independence

other parts of the royal family tonight.

Iran fires missiles at US base in Iraq / Trump Reaction

Iran fires missiles at US base in Iraq

News reported : From the Pentagon that
this attack began about three hours ago.
it involved more than a dozen missiles
being fired from inside Iran targeting
those air bases in Iraq as you mentioned
that house US troops this is the exact
scenario that the US had been preparing
for and essentially that Iran had warned
that it would carry out in retaliation
for the killing of general Soleimani the.

Iranians had made it clear that they would launch direct attacks in response and wouldn't rely on their proxies and
the Americans came to believe that those direct attacks would be on US forces in the region so they were prepared for this likely hunkered down as you mentioned there are early reports of
Iraqi casualties the Pentagon says it is still carrying out a damage assessment at those bases and is still waiting to see exactly how much damage there is before determining what kind of response
there will be as we understand it there have been at least two waves of ballistic missile attacks from Iran tonight but again the details still unfolding at this hour it's going to be
a very tricky and delicate situation for the White House at this hour we understand that .

President Trump is monitoring the situation from the White
House Situation Room the ball is
effectively now in his court he has to decide if or how he responds to this attack obviously that will depend on the
magnitude of the damage and the attack itself earlier today though he issued a
stern warning from the Oval Office that
any Iranian retaliation would be met
with a full-throated American response
perhaps there is some room to
things back here you heard the president make reference to cultural sites today
and how he might try and avoid him that is a change in tone from earlier this week when he said he would target
Iranian cultural sites that would
violate international law so Donna
perhaps if he's willing to step back
their all-out war can be avoided it's
all going to unfold very rapidly .

Chinese electric cars and vehicles

Chinese electric cars and vehicles

China is now also the world's largest market for electric cars.
And China's electric vehicle market is transforming not only Chinese automakers, but forcing international
companies to ramp up production as well.
With the support of the Pulitzer Center, we return to our series "China: Power & Prosperity."
Special correspondent Katrina Yu begins her report in Hefei, China.
In one of the world's most advanced factories, a start-up is working to ensure
the future of electric cars is driven by China.
NIO is described as China's Tesla.
It produces electric SUVs for environmentally conscious millennial .

Each vehicle comes with an artificially intelligent dashboard robot, access to drive-through NIO
power stations that swap out dead batteries, and exclusive NIO clubhouses.
CEO William Li says NIO is more than a car.
WILLIAM LI, CEO, NIO (through translator): NIO doesn't only want to be an electric car
brand, but a lifestyle brand.
We hope to create a community which starts from the car.
It's about living well, living consciously, and creating a happy way of living. That happiness is mostly for China's upper middle class,
The ES6 and ES8 are priced between $40,000 to $70,000.
Li says Chinese drivers are slowly seeing the benefits of owning an electric vehicle,
but many still need to be convinced to make the switch from gas or diesel. These days people still aren't familiar with electric
cars and can have some misunderstandings.

We need to provide a better environment for customers, so they can better understand the
benefits . Providing this better environment is exactly what the Chinese government is
trying to do.
Earlier this year, a state-owned fund injected NIO with $1.4 billion.
And the government doesn't just support companies.
It also incentivizes consumers.
In Beijing, Zhu Mengxiao's electric car is worth about $30,000 dollars.
But after government subsidies, she only paid $18,000.
Zhu took me for a spin.
In China, owning a car is one thing.

Having the right to drive it can be another.
To reduce overcrowding on roads, the government carefully manages license plates.
Residents can only get one through a lottery, but the odds of winning are low if you're
driving a gas guzzler.
It's like a real lottery.
There's a chance that you won't win anything your whole life.
When we first applied for a license plate, we were waiting a long time and didn't receive
one for a gas-powered car.
Only after the exceptions appeared for electric cars could we buy this car.
Zhu received her electric car license plate within a few months.
She was initially worried about the car's battery life, but says the pros outweigh .With more advanced technologies, more people are likely
to choose electric cars, especially since the price of petrol fluctuates and often jumps.

Electric cars can be cheaper to use and more eco-friendly. Putting more eco-friendly cars on China's roads is critical.
Just outside Beijing, a coal plant belches smoke, a reminder that China remains the world's
largest emitter of greenhouse gases.
Two-thirds of China's electricity comes from coal.
And it often leads to days like this.
Reducing air pollution is central to China's campaign to make cars green .The government's goal of cutting
emissions is aligned with its promotion of the electric vehicle industry.
In total, there are about 400 million vehicles in China.

And, every day, they produce a huge amount of emissions.
If a number of those become electric, then it will have a great impact.
KATRINA YU: Electric cars are also key to reducing the country's reliance on foreign oil .China is a country with few resources .
Local production doesn't meet the country's needs, so China needs electric cars.
Since encouraging them, we reduced petrol consumption by nine million tons. That's a reduction of less than 1 percent.
But with public transportation increasingly going green, that figure is set to grow.
Top-selling electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has turned the southern metropolis of
Shenzhen into the world's first city to rely only on electric buses.
Shenzhen alone now operates more electric buses than every city in the world outside of China combined.

Almost all of the city's 22,000 cabs are electric.
But some drivers wish they weren't forced to make the switch. Electric taxi drivers definitely earn less
because it takes several hours to recharge the car.
Sometimes, we have to wait in line.
Two months ago, I waited in line one hour or more for a charging stations.
Then it took me two hours to recharge.
Those are hours I could have been working.
The central planners of China's government say they're committed to ensuring the electric
vehicle market becomes a world leader.
This year China, imposed an emissions credit system that requires car manufacturers to
reduce emissions below a certain level, or pay for credits from other companies.
That's an expenditure they want to avoid, so they are being compelled to go more green.
And that applies to domestic and international carmakers.
At a plant in Foshan in China's south, German automaker Audi is building its first fully
electric car designed especially for the Chinese market.
Audi plans to launch 30 hybrid and electric models around the world by 2025.

       China is Audi's biggest market.
And China's drive for new energy vehicles, or NEVs, is impossible to ignore, says director
executive Heinz-Willi Vassen.
HEINZ-WILLI VASSEN, Director of Digitalization, Audi: This is a key element here in China,
so it would be a very big risk not to be able to offer new technology in the Chinese market,
so, for us, not acceptable.
We sell more than 30 percent of our cars, we target to have 40 percent of our cars sold in China.
So, for us, it's a key market. Audi isn't the only global brand lining up to comply with China's ex strategy.
Ford and General Motors will also launch electric models made specifically for the Chinese market
by the end of this year, while Tesla's first factory outside the U.S. is nearing completion.
But for Chinese brands, there have been some speed bumps.
NIO is struggling with months of sluggish sales and reports of battery fires.

The company has had to fire 10 percent of its work force.
And across the country, a weakening economy has reduced auto sales, including a 7 percent
slump in electric vehicle sales.
It hasn't helped that consumer subsidies began being scaled back in June, driving up the
cost to buy one.
NIO CEO William Li downplays concerns.
He says his company and the electric industry overall are just starting to get on the road.
The car industry is constantly changing.

       There are always new challenges.
We have more and more customers, and their situation is changing too.
It is not easy and it takes time.
But government regulations and a massive market will help ensure momentum
toward green cars and that policy-makers in Beijing, not Washington or California, are
in the driver's seat.

Australia Fire / Forest fires in Australia 2020/Australia fire reasons and climate change

Australia fire

Australia forest fire death toll

Now what's happening in Australia is unprecedented the bush fires have killed 18 people they have killed close to half a billion of animals .They are over twice as big as the Amazon forest fires and they are exerting extreme political pressure on Prime Minister Scott Morrison .

Australia fire and weather

The volume of smoke that is being generated due to Australia forest fires  many of these are so big .They are even forming their own weather events which that can lightning which then in turn sparks more fires .Thousands of Australian have decided they need to leave the areas affected in part because conditions are predicted to worsen over the weekend with more hyper temperature and more strong winds because of all this New South Wales has declared a week long emergency that is partly because of the calculation that the threat level is likely to increase .

Australia fire satellite

This above is satellite image of Australia forest fire which shows you the volume of smoke spreading across much of the state .Australia more than 4 million hectares have been burnt in the last six months that is brought devastating human costs and devastating environmental costs too.

now let me give you the latest on the
bush fires in Australia there's
particular focus on the states of
Victoria and New South Wales where there
are fears that a number of these fires
could merge into what's being called
mega blaze now this is a live
visualization of active fires and
they're given to their privacy notice
and this is a BuzzFeed a squashy active
fires from NASA as you can see New South
Wales is bearing the brunt of this there
was brief respite over the weekend with
some blight city rain and it was
well-received in Sydney so some cheers
for the rain but I'm afraid it's not
going to last long the hot dry weather
is due to return though and prime
minister Scott Morrison is warning the
fire emergency could last for months
here are some of the latest pictures
first of all these are taken in Victoria
ston assurance I'd a military aircraft
attempting to land in a haze of bushfire
smoke the military is now involved in a
range of evacuation efforts we also have
these aerial pictures which show the
devastation of one community in Batlow
in New South Wales and they get an idea
of the extent of the damage the fires
are also having devastating
environmental consequences koalas
usually get their water intake from
eucalyptus leaves as you can see at the
moment they're having to get a lot of
help from us these pictures from South
Australia's Kangaroo Island it's
renowned for its wildlife it's home to
several threatened species there are now
fears some species could be wiped out we
know in New South Wales alone it's
believed that hundreds of millions of
animals had been killed
well next let's focus on the coastal
town of Eden in the far southeast of New
South Wales many residents have been evacuated,
Eden Wharf had become a makeshift
evacuation center when the weekend fires
came very close to this town people came
here they sheltered in boats in cars
some in the open air just to be close to
the water we have a bit of a lull in the
weather now the temperatures and the
winds have dropped
we have rain which many people have been
telling me they were praying for but we
know this is not going to last
authorities are saying they're expecting
worse conditions later in the week and
that's really been the story of these
fires there are more to come
and people are living in limbo and this
is what residents in Eden have told us
the uncertainty as to what happens when
the fire does come through cause how fast
is gonna come here's the window if the
wind really picks up and comes over that
hill it's gonna come in it like you know
like a fireball
there's just the waiting game for it to
stop now I should also mention the
firefighters some are paid professionals
many are volunteers and some of them
have lost their lives since these fires
began this is a picture that was widely
shared from last week where a
one-year-old boy received a bravery
medal on behalf of his father who had
died a few days before and since
September 25 people firefighters and
others have died over 1,200 homes have
been destroyed and millions of hectares
have been burnt out
prime minister Scott Morrison has
announced a further 1.4 billion u.s.
dollars to help with the fire recovery.
We make this commitment to all.
Australians that we will be there for
you during this immediate response and
we will be there for the rebuilding and
the recovery and today in cabinet we
have made a number of decisions to
support that recovery effort to do
whatever it takes to do whatever it
costs to meet those needs to build our
resilience for the future and to enable.
Australians wherever they are all across
the country to be able to go forward in
confidence for their futures the Prime.
Minister's been facing relentless
criticism remember he went on hold later,

Australia Fire reason and climate change

Why during a week in December when the
temperatures spiked and the fires
intensified there's also been
frustration that help for rural
communities has been too slow and too
little remember this from last week and
we've seen his sincerity being
questioned to my colleague Nick bride
says an Australian Prime Minister
slammed for being a slick PR man out of
his depth in the midst of a national
crisis response to criticisms by
producing a slick PR ad and that's
reference to Scott Morrison's previous
career in marketing but also to this
video which the
government has put out in the last few
days this is some of it that's the
government pushing back at the idea that
it's not responding adequately to this
crisis the most serious criticism though
aimed at Scott Morrison is that he's not
doing enough on climate change the
context here is that Australia's being
getting hot over the last century
especially in the last 25 years that
increase in temperatures being caused by
climate change which in turn is caused
by humans and the higher temperatures
mean that the chances of bigger faster
and more intense bush fires are higher
than they used to be
now Scott Morrison technology is
reducing emissions would reduce bushfire
risk and he says Australia's meeting its
climate commitments but that's disputed
by the UN it's also disputed by one of
the architects of the Paris climate
Accord she accuses Australia of cheating
the system and she created the system so
she's familiar with it
Scott Morrison also talks about the need
for balance and what that really means
it's helping to reduce Australia's
emissions while supporting Australia's
vast fossil fuel industry which creates
lots of emissions it's a tough balance
especially as coal experts were worth 42
billion u.s. dollars in the last
financial year for Australia and were
responsible for around 50,000 jobs so
these are difficult political choices no
doubt but Scott Morrison is clear his
government takes climate change
seriously but here are some examples
which don't necessarily quite fit with
that this is his deputy talking about
people who were trying to connect the
fires and climate change well they don't
need the radius of some pure enlightened
and woke capital city greenies at this
time when they're trying to save their
home well there's the Prime Minister's
backbench MP Craig Kelly he posted on
Facebook a few weeks ago climate
alarmists have been out peddling the
claim that rising temperatures due to
climate change are putting the Boxing
Day Test in doubt that's a quicker game
he goes on to say it's a total
perception a complete pack of lies and
like everything to do with climate
change it's not only a lie but the truth
is the exact opposite this is the same
MP who in 2016 Lincoln
viewable energy to child drownings and
he I should Erie its rate represents the
party in power or there's the senior
government MP reacting to news last year.
